Bone Health Matters

Bone Health Matters

Bone health is often NOT given its due importance. Consuming a diet high in nutrients, getting enough vitamin D, and exercising keeps bones strong. Women also battle hormone fluctuations which further causes the calcium in bones to be lost, thus lowering bone density.

Here are some pointers to maintain the best possible health for your bones:

Steer clear of BONE thieves

  • Coffee, white salt, phosphate-based foods such as cheese, ready to eat foods, fast foods and aerated soft drinks reduce calcium absorption from food, also promote excretion taking away calcium from bones.
  • Alcohol and nicotine affect bones negatively. Studies have shown that smoking stimulates bone-degrading substances such as osteoclasts thereby reducing density. Additionally alcohol plays a role in elimination of calcium from body and decreasing the formation of vitamin D3 in the liver.
  • Stress is another reason for hormone fluctuations which impact bones negatively.

Suggestions

  • Move: Exercising in fresh air is good for bone and muscle health
  • Stretch: Good muscle strength supports bones
  • Sun Vitamin: Sun exposure helps strengthen bones
  • Social: Be social, meet and connect with people, its a great stressbuster
  • Be symptom aware after 40s
  • Constant body aches – Get a DEXA test if body aches refuse to go away
  • Preventive care – Get preventive tests done regularly.
  • Brittle nails – This indicates Ca deficiency

Health bones means one would lead an active life in aging years too. A healthy body sure is a gift to cherish!
