Show Must Go On but at What Cost!

Show Must Go On but at What Cost!

Have we forgotten to express ourselves in our quest to keep the show going and conform to socially acceptable norm.

In urban social life we are stereotyped to fit in and it is more so for women:

  • emotions are often suppressed
  • reactions are absent, its just a stare or silence
  • no vocal expression
  • no tears or anger
  • stiff upper lip
  • always presentable in public

Few facts:

  1. Prevalence: Women are more likely to have mental illness than men:
  2. Globally: 11.9% of women have a mental illness, compared to only 9.3% of men
  3. Common mental disorders: 19% of women have a common mental disorder, compared to 12% of men
  4. Major depression: Women are nearly twice as likely to have major depression than men
  5. Mental health issues for women: Women with serious mental disorders may face stigma and social issues

Self-expression somehow has gotten lost. With a gamut of emotions that humans have, we laugh, cry, be happy, get angry, feel weak, feel scared, elated, joyous. Close your eyes and reflect how many of these you actually see around in city-life. In rural communities mental health issues are much less as compared to urban ones, as they express freely – crying, weeping, laughing and venting out frustrations!

Emotional processing is very important for one’s mental health. If one continues to keep silent refraining from voicing an opinion, concern or ones viewpoint; sooner or later negative impact of silence is sure to surface in the form of some sort of mental challenges at some point of life.
